Soothing Hot Ginger Toddy with Homemade Ginger Liqueur

A cold and blustery evening is the perfect time to invite a few close friends over and share stories over a tasty Hot Ginger Toddy made with Homemade Ginger Liqueur.

Homemade Ginger Liqueur

What you need:

  • 1/4 cup (50 mL) of fresh ginger
  • 1 vanilla bean
  • 1 cup (250 mL) Redpath Granulated White Sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups (375 mL) water
  • zest of 1 orange
  • 1 1/2 cups brandy (375 mL)

How to prepare:
1. Peel and slice the ginger. Slit the vanilla bean lengthwise with a knife, and scrape out the seeds with the tip of the knife.

2. In a saucepan, mix together the ginger, vanilla seeds, vanilla bean, sugar, and water. Bring mixture to boil over medium heat, then reduce heat to low and simmer. Let mixture simmer until the ginger is soft, about 20 minutes. Let cool.

3. In a resealable glass container place the cooled syrup, orange zest, and brandy. Seal and give it a shake. Let the mixture sit for one day.

4. Remove the vanilla bean after one day and let the mixture sit for one more day.

5. Strain the mixture, and let it sit for one more day to develop the flavour fully.

Hot Ginger Toddy

What you need:

  • 1 cup (250 mL) hot water
  • 1 spiced tea bag
  • 2 tbsp (30 mL) or prepared Ginger Liqueur

How to prepare:
1. Make the tea with the hot water. Add the ginger liqueur. Garnish with a slice of lemon or orange.
